Chapter 11

Carter

As much as I wanted to flood her with phone calls and texts, I knew I had to be careful. Maggie was skittish, and I knew she didn’t trust me. I had to be gentle with her. Which meant giving her the space she needed to think. But I also had to let her know I wasn’t going anywhere.

So, I decided to do some self-education.

I went down to the local bookstore and picked up some baby books, everything from pregnancy books to postnatal care. Even books on babyproofing a house. I educated myself on what Maggie’s body was going through. What she and the baby would go through after labor. I’d spent the last few days devouring these books, doing nothing but studying, working on that damn paper, and reading these books.

Which led to me babyproofing my apartment.

I stood there, surveying the rooms. I was proud of what I had accomplished. Every corner had bumpers on them. The sockets were all plugged up with plastic plugs. The cabinets were sealed closed with babyproof locks. And all the chemicals had been put on higher shelves in my kitchen and bathroom. I wanted to show Maggie my progress and what I’d done. I wanted to prove to her that I was in this for the long haul, even if we did this as co-parents.

Though, I had to admit, I wanted something more with her.

I pulled my phone out and dialed her number. I held it to my ear, listening to it ring and ring and ring. I grew anxious that she wouldn’t pick up, that she’d dodge my calls or some shit like that.

Then, the phone clicked.

“Hey there, Carter.”

My chest warmed at her voice. “Hey there. How are you?”

“Moving a bit slow, but I’m okay. What’s up?”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

She giggled. “Yes, I’m fine. Just tired. Is there something you need?”

You. “Would you like to meet up at my place this afternoon? I have something to show you.”

“Your place?”

“Uh-huh. I can send you the address.”

“Meet at your place.”

I paused. “Is… that okay?”

She sighed. “Um, yeah. Yeah, that’s—that’s okay. I mean, I’m working right now. But my shift ends around three?”

“What are you doing for work?”

“We can talk about that when I get there.”

I furrowed my brow. “Okay. Sure. You can come on by after your shift. Or I can pick you up.”

“Picking me up sounds good. If that’s okay.”

I smiled. “Of course it’s okay. Shoot me your work address, and I’ll be there at three.”

We hung up the phone, and I waited for the address. And when it came through, I saw why she was hesitant to tell me where she worked. I had to double-check the address just to make sure I had it right. But I’d been right. Being a taxi driver did that, giving me the ability to pinpoint addresses on the spot.

The mother of my child worked at a bar.

I paced my apartment. I counted down the minutes until I could leave and go get her. I mean, sure, we’d met under unique circumstances, but I really liked Maggie.
